Introduction to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

श्री नरेन्द्र मोदी ने स्वच्छ भारत मिशन की नई दिल्ली, राजपथ पर शुरूआत करते हुए कहा था कि “एक स्वच्छ भारत के द्वारा ही देश 2019 में महात्मा गांधी की 150वीं जयंती पर अपनी सर्वोत्तम श्रद्धांजलि दे सकते हैं।” 2 अक्टूबर, 2014 को स्वच्छ भारत मिशन देश भर में व्यापक तौर पर राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के रूप में शुरू किया गया था। इस अभियान के अंतर्गत 2 अक्टूबर 2019 तक “स्वच्छ भारत” की परिकल्पना को साकार करने का लक्ष्य निर्धारित किया गया है।

स्वच्छ भारत अभियान भारत सरकार द्वारा चलाया गया सबसे महत्वपूर्ण स्वच्छता अभियान है। श्री नरेन्द्र मोदी ने इंडिया गेट पर स्वच्छता के लिए आयोजित एक प्रतिज्ञा समारोह की अगुआई की थी। जिसमें देश भर से आए हुए लगभग 50 लाख सरकारी कर्मचारियों ने भाग लिया। उन्होंने इस अवसर पर राजपथ पर एक पदयात्रा को भी झंडी दिखाई थी और न केवल सांकेतिक रूप से दो चार कदम चले बल्कि भाग लेने वालों के साथ काफी दूर तक चलकर लोगों को आश्चर्यचकित कर दिया।

India, a nation known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes, has long struggled with a pervasive issue – sanitation and cleanliness. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a transformative campaign known as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or the Clean India Mission, with the aim of making India clean and open defecation-free. This ambitious initiative has not only made significant strides in improving hygiene and sanitation but has also changed the way India perceives cleanliness.

The Genesis of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched on October 2, 2014, to commemorate the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who championed cleanliness as an essential aspect of human dignity. The mission was not just about constructing toilets but about altering attitudes and behaviors towards sanitation. It recognized the direct link between cleanliness, health, and overall development, emphasizing the need for a cleaner and healthier India.

One of the primary objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was to eliminate open defecation by constructing millions of toilets across rural and urban areas. The construction of individual and community toilets aimed to provide a dignified and safe sanitation facility to every Indian.

Proper waste management is crucial for maintaining cleanliness. The campaign sought to promote the segregation of waste at source and the construction of waste processing plants. This not only reduced the burden on landfills but also generated employment opportunities.
